Glossop Chronicle 1957-01-25 (this would be the sale of Martha's estate by her sons and daughters).
Continuing these place name puzzles, the writer has been loaned by a Hadfleld gentleman a printed poster measuring two feet nine inches by one foot 11 inches. It is dated "23rd of September, 1847." and advertises an auction sale. This is the time when Glossop was growing industrially and in population; when the "mill cottages" were being "thrown up." It was reckoned that some of these mill cottages were built and completed for 50 pounds apiece. This auction sale of land and cottages was held at "The Norfolk Arms Inn, Howardtown. Glossop, at six o'clock in the evening". If there were then street lamps they would be paraffin lamps; the Glossop Gas Co Ltd was barely two years old, and it was not a popular concern, especially with the cotton masters.
And where was Throstle's Nest?
All the land and cottages offered at this auction for sale were situated under the general place name of "Throstle's Nest in the Parish of Glossop". The parish of St James' Whitfield had only just been created out of the ancient Pariah of Glossop and the Vestry was the controlling civil administrative unit except for Poor Relief which was governed in addition by the Justices Overseers and Guardians.
Two of the lots offered were said, in addition, to be situate at "The Mill Moor" and the "Mill Moor Meadow" and a third plot was described as "adjoining the turnpike road leading from Manchester to Sheffield". The poster continues: "The above mentioned closes of land are very well situated for building sites. There is an excellent bed of clay which has been found to be very suitable for making bricks, and a very superior spring of water rises in the lower part of the first mentioned close of land. The said premises are near to the extensive cotton manufactories of Francis Sumner Esquire, and being near to the Sheffield turnpike road offer an opportunity for the investment of capital, rarely to be met with."
Glossop, in High Street West (for this was the Sheffield turnpike) was growing, here was the land before the "mill cottages" were built.
"Mill Moor" appears to have been the slope from High Street West rising to Pikes Lane: there are in fact four houses bearing a wall plaque "Mill Moor Terrace" in Pikes Lane built more than 30 years later than the date of this poster. This shows how the name survived. Two other items of interest before we leave "Mill Meadow or Mill Moor". Were bricks in fact made on this land, and is this the reason for the old place name "Brick Hill?" And did Spring Street take its name from the spring mentioned in the land sale?
