Garlicks in Glossop - Page 1

This page shows my Garlick ancestors in Glossop in Derbyshire, England (based mainly on the Parish Registers). All being well the analysis is accurate but if there are mistakes then I apologise. Like everyone else, I'm human (honest) so please use this list as it is intended and check back against the original documents to be sure. Happy hunting.

1. John Garlick b. ca 1685, occ: Husbandman/lab/farmer, d. 16 Sep 1766, Glossop, bur: Glossop Parish Church. Parish register entries describe him as of Great Padfield. MI gives age when he died as 81.

2. Robert Garlick b. 1740, bpt: 23 Feb 1740, Glossop Parish Church, occ: Shoemaker, m. Mary Broadbent, b. 1745, (daughter of John Broadbent) d. 21 Jul 1814, bur: 23 Jul 1814, Glossop Parish Church. Robert died 13 May 1824, bur: 16 May 1824, Glossop Parish Church. Parish register describes him as of Padfield & Waterside.

Betty Garlick bpt: 20 Feb 1747, Glossop Parish Church, m. 28 Mar 1769, in Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, Benjamin Syddall, b. ca 1745, (son of Phineas Syddall and Sarah (Syddall) see family #4 on the first Syddall Page) occ: Linen weaver, bur: 26 Aug 1821, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Benjamin: Parish register entries describe him as being of Padfield, Hilltop and Betten Hill. Entry for his burial gives his age as 76. Banns for marriage read 5, 12, 19 March 1769. Witnesses to marriage Jonathin Knott, John Bray.

Mary Garlick bpt: 12 Apr 1749, Tintwistle Independent church, m. 2 Jul 1772, in Glossop Parish Church, Jonathan Wood, b. 1754, (son of Jonathan Wood and Sarah (Wood) see family #17 on the second Wood Page) occ: Linenweaver, d. 12 May 1786, bur: 14 May 1786, Glossop Parish Church. Jonathan: PR describes him as of Padfield. Witnesses to marriage were Thomas Hadfield & John Garlick.

5. Samuel Garlick b. Jan 1754, bpt: 25 Jan 1754, Glossop Parish Church, occ: See notes, m. 13 Jul 1777, in Glossop, Martha Thornely Syddall, bpt: 24 Dec 1755, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, (daughter of Phineas Syddall and Sarah (Syddall) see family #6 on the first Syddall Page). Samuel died 7 Jul 1827, bur: 10 Jul 1827, Glossop Parish Church. Parish register entries describe him as of Padfield and give his occupation variously as linen weaver, husbandman, farmer, shoemaker & labourer. Appears to have been a second bpt on 19 Feb 1754 at Tintwistle Independent. Witneses to marriage were Jonathan Knott & George Siddall.

6. Martha Garlick bpt: 1 Feb 1757, Glossop Parish Church, m. 4 Dec 1783, in Glossop Parish Church, Thomas Wagstaffe, (son of George Wagstaffe) occ: Fustian Weaver. Appears to be another bpt at Tintwistle Independent on 26 Jan 1757. Thomas: PR describes him as of Hadfield. Witnesses to marriage were Joseph Willis & William Newton.

7. Hannah Garlick bpt: 12 May 1776, Glossop parish church, m. 23 Aug 1796, in Glossop Parish Church, Martin Wood (see family #33 on the second Wood Page), occ: Labourer. Hannah bur: 24 Oct 1819, Glossop Parish Church. Martin: PR describes him as of Waterside & Tintwistle. Possibly of Woodhead (burial 10 April 1836). Witnesses to marriage were Ralph Hudson & James Platts.

Robert Garlick b. 20 Apr 1784, bpt: 30 May 1784, Glossop Parish Church, occ: Cotton spinner/blacksmith, m. 25 Jul 1814, in Glossop Parish Church, Mary Harrison, b. 1783, d. 9 May 1835, bur: 12 May 1835, Glossop Parish Church. Robert died 14 Apr 1853, bur: Glossop Parish Church. Parish register describes him as of Waterside. Witnesses to first marriage were Joseph Newton & John Hadfield. Possibly married another Mary as censuses of 1841 & 1851 include a Mary aged 52 & 62. Mary: PR describes her as of Glossop on marriage.

10. Samuel Garlick b. 25 Aug 1793, bpt: 7 Oct 1793, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, occ: Cotton spinner, m. 21 Sep 1819, in Glossop Parish Church, Mary Buckley. PR describes him as of Whitfield, Padfield & Moor Side. Witnesses to marriage eere John Clark & Thomas Harrison.
